4 Ways To Be A Conscious Leader

Written By: Kevin Watson

It requires some thought to be a conscious leader.

But, is being a leader really worth the time and effort?

This is the question that many leaders ask themselves in quiet moments, often in the middle of the night!

On the plus side, leadership provides the opportunity to take responsibility, be part of interesting work and offers the chance to make a difference.

On the downside: your neck is on the line, your time is not your own, you are responsible for others, it’s easy to get isolated both professionally and personally.

Often people give little thought to what being a leader really means, drifting along and falling into their position.

If you stay drifting like this for long, you may feel frustrated, conflicted or unhappy. It takes a toll on your enthusiasm, vision and energy – all characteristics needed to lead effectively.

So, how do you move out of the drift and into action with purpose? Become a conscious leader!

The next generation of conscious leaders will create a new future.Anon

Take a look at these 4 simple steps to become a more conscious leader:

1. Look Around

Take a real look at what’s going on around you. Does a new boss want different things from you? Has your team been asked to take on double the work with no more resources?

In essence, what are the current demands that impact how you want to lead?

2. Get Clear

Clarify your reasons for leading. Did you choose to become a leader or did it somehow choose you? How comfortable are you in your leadership role? What impact do you want to have as a leader?

And, do you have a clear leadership vision built on your own set of values?

3. Define

Articulate your leadership brand, beginning with your strengths and developmental needs. Include the models and tools that have influenced your style and draw upon as a leader.

Your skills, style and experience all contribute to who you are as a leader. Having this knowledge about yourself can help you find your way out of the drift, or avoid it altogether. You will better understand your response to change, or your need for collaboration, or why you feel stuck.

4. Assess

Weigh up the costs of leadership. How closely does your leadership brand match up with reality?

Are your values and vision compatible with your work in the organisation? If you need a gut check on this, ask yourself: “If I was leading in a completely authentic way (that is, consistent with your leadership vision and values), what would I do differently this week?

Call to Action

To be a conscious leader, start making purposeful choices about why, when, how and where you lead.

The ability to be clear about these choices helps you achieve greater success as a leader and as a person.
